The Murders
On 20 August 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez shot their parents at close range with shotguns while they were sitting on the couch in their living room. José was shot to the head and body, and Kitty also received several shots. The brothers waited for hours after they had committed the murders before they called 911 and reported that they found the corpses of their parents when they returned home from watching a movie.
In the initial stages, it seemed like it was a case of home invasion. Lyle and Erik, however, indulged in excessive spending for a few months following the murder. They splurged on expensive cars, overseas lavish tours, and extravagant living, which did not go unnoticed to the investigators. Their lavish spending made detectives take a closer look at the brothers.

Confession and Incarceration
Erik Menendez finally confessed to the murders at one session with his therapist, Dr. L. Jerome Oziel. The confession was decisive to the case. The girlfriend of Dr. Oziel testified that she had heard him discussing the confession that he had made to her and called the police. Brothers were arrested in March 1990.

Trial: Abuse Claims and Media Frenzy
The Menendez case was one of the first highly publicized trials, in which courtroom proceedings were broadcast live on television. In court, a picture of dysfunction in a household wracked by psychological and sexual abuse surfaced through the defense. Lyle and Erik claimed that their father, José Menendez, had sexually abused them for years and that their mother was complicit in the abuse. They said that the killings were merely a result of years of pent-up fear and trauma and that they believed their parents were going to kill them to prevent their exposure to the abuse.
The arguments of abuse did cause division in the opinion of the public; some felt for the brothers, but others thought this was all just a ploy to get out of punishment for premeditated murder. The prosecution insisted that they killed their parents out of greed and on account of how lavishly they spent.

Judgment and Conviction
In the first trial in 1993, there had been two hung juries, leading to a mistrial. The defense had convinced some members of the jury that the brothers were helpless because of abuse, but other jurors were unable to assume that. In the second trial, held in 1996, the judge would not allow that emphasis on abuse, and the brothers were eventually convicted of two counts of first-degree murder as well as conspiracy to commit murder.
Lyle and Erik Menendez received consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole. Though both have been incarcerated in various facilities since their imprisonment, in 2018, they were confined to the same facility.

The Aftermath and Public Legacy
The Menendez case remains so remarkable and fascinating for the public mainly because of the dramatic nature of the crimes and the controversial defense strategy applied by the brothers. Brothers claimed they suffered from abuse though proven to be questionable; hence, society burst into debate about childhood trauma and its connection to psychological damage, giving rise to criminal tendencies. Years after the incident, books and documentaries were written, and even the real case was fictionalized in a few movies.
The case has experienced a resurgence of interest in recent years, particularly with the popularity of the 'true crime' media series. Some have gone so far as to call for the reassessment of the brothers' abuse claims, suggesting that their harsh sentence may have been a product of a lack of understanding of trauma and its impact at the time.
